New members elected to the Youth Board!
On Saturday 28 th July 2007, hundreds of young people from South Kilburn gathered at the SK Youth Festival for the last chance to vote in the South Kilburn Youth Board elections.
The Festival was an excellent end to the 3 week voting period and gave young people in SK a chance to showcase their talents – to see pictures of the event click here.
At the end of the day the results of the election were announced and 12 of the 20 candidates found out that they had been elected by the young people of South Kilburn to represent them on the 2 nd SKNDC Youth Board.
Over 300 young people took the chance to vote and we are delighted to reveal that the successful candidates are:
Devante WATSON
Pedro GOLDING
Dorsha THOMPSON
Dwight OKEKE
Hannah BALL
Antillia CANOVILLE
Chattoya SHAW
Susie ANTUBAM
Faisal DHONDEE
Mikel EDGHILL
Keisha FREDERICKS
Robert DOKU
SKNDC and The Campaign Company would like to thank all the candidates for putting themselves forward for election – everyone ran a great campaign and everyone was in with a chance of getting a place right up until the end of the festival.
We would also like to thank those members of last year's Board who were not re-elected, for their hard work over the last 12 months. Thanks to those original members the Youth Board has grown and has established itself as a vital element in youth service provision in South Kilburn – proof of this was shown by the large number of candidates standing and the great support we received from young people and everyone in South Kilburn. We hope that previous Board members will continue to support the Youth Board its new members.
So, this is a new year for the Youth Board and we want it to be as successful as the last year but to do this we need your help. You, the young people of South Kilburn, know what this area needs and how to change it and improve your lives; the Youth Board are here to help, and we need to hear from you. If you have anything to say to the Youth Board about any issues relating to young people in South Kilburn then click here to send us an email. Or if you have an idea for setting up a youth project but need some money to achieve this then click here to find out more about the £30,000 the Youth Board has to spend on youth projects.
What is the Youth Board?
The Youth Board was set up to represent the youth of South Kilburn. It is made up of 12 young people aged 11 – 24. Over the past 2 years the Youth Board has represented young people’s interests and advised on issues that affect young people both locally and nationally.
The Youth Board also has its own budget which has been allocated especially to improve the lives of young people in South Kilburn. This year the budget is £20,000 – and you have the chance to decide what to do with it!
How can I stand as a Youth Board candidate?
You will be able to stand for the Youth Board if you are aged between 11 and 24 and live in the South Kilburn NDC area. Representing South Kilburn isn’t difficult - everyone that stands as a candidate will receive training and support so they will know how:
- the election works
- to run a campaign
- to write a manifesto (a list of things you will do if elected)
- to give speeches
- to deal with the media
You can download a candidate pack here. Completed nomination forms, including manifestos, need to be returned to us by June 21st. You will also need to attend a candidate training session on either June 25th, 26th or 27th.
What will I have to do as a Youth Board Member?
Once the Youth Board is elected there will be plenty of support from the NDC so that the Board can carry out their role. You will probably only have to spend a couple of days a month as a member of the Youth Board so there will still be plenty of time for you to do other things.
How can I vote in the election?
All young people aged between 11 and 24 who live in the South Kilburn NDC area will be able to vote in the Youth Board elections.
The election will take place between July 9th and July 28th. July 28th is the South Kilburn Youth Festival and this is where the final results will be announced.
Ballot papers will be available from Queen’s Park School, St Augustine’s School, the OK Club, the Granville Centre, Fairbridge and the NDC office on Canterbury Road.
